Top 5 Rock Biographies

If you want a more detailed information about your rock idol's biography, then you have to pay a visit to a local bookshop and start reading your idol's biography. Some rock icons' stories are inspirational, some are dark, and some are tragic, but still, it is interesting to find out what our rock star's life's like. How do they handle being a rock star, what do they do, and how do they feel being attached to "The Rockstar" label. I've listed My Top 5 Rock idol's biography for you to have something to start with. Let's sit back, relax, and meet our rock idol "backstage".

Heavier than Heaven - A 2001 biography of Kurt Cobain, the grunge rock band Nirvana's frontman, was written by Charles R. Cross. Cross made 400 interviews and was granted by Kurt's widow Courtney Love to access the private private photos, journals and lyrics. The book's title was taken from Nirvana's tour with the band Tad in UK. Tad's Lead singer Tad Doyle was very obese; the name which was thought up by the tour promoters, was meant in part to poke fun at the inaccurate idea that Tad alone weighed more than all of the members of Nirvana put together. It also summed both Nirvana's heavy sound and Tad Doyle's heavy weight.

The Beatles Anthology - A book which is part of The Beatles Anthology Film project which was released on October 2000. It includes interviews of all the band's members and over 1200 rare photos. It also contain imaginative artwork throughout, and visually impressive and colorful spreads featuring graphics relevant to the proceeding chronology, photographic arrays and a variety of text styles and layouts. It went straight to New York Time's Best seller books of all time.

Catch A Fire: The Life of Bob Marley - The Classic biography of the reggae legend Bob Marley, written by Timothy White. It contains an appendix to the new edition chronicles Marley's legacy in recent years, as well as the ongoing controversy over the possibility that Marley's remains might be exhumed from Nine Mile, Jamaica, and reburied in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where hundreds of Rastafarians live. The new edition also contains an expanded discography and is factually updated throughout.

Enter Night: A Biography of Metallica - Mick Wall’s thoroughly researched, insightful work is enriched by his interviews with band members, record company execs, roadies, and fellow musicians. He tells the story of how a tennis-playing, music-loving Danish immigrant named Lars Ulrich created a band with singer James Hetfield and made his dreams a reality. Enter Night follows the band through tragedy and triumph, from the bus crash that killed their bassist Cliff Burton in 1986 to the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster, and on to their current status as the leaders of the Big Four festival that played to a million fans in Britain and Europe and continues in the U.S. in 2011. (Book Description)

Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley - Written by Peter Guralnick, Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley takes us deep inside Elvis' life, exploring his lifelong passion for music of every sort (from blues and gospel to Bing Crosby and Mario Lanza), his compelling affection for his family, and his intimate relationships with girlfriends, mentors, band members, professional associates, and friends. It shows us the loneliness, the trustfulness, the voracious appetite for experience, and above all the unshakable, almost mystical faith that Elvis had in himself and his music. Drawing frequently on Elvis' own words and on the recollections of those closest to him, the book offers an emotional, complex portrait of young Elvis Presley with a depth and dimension that for the first time allow his extraordinary accomplishments to ring true. Top 5 Rock Movies

Being a fan of rock music, I also go for movies with great rock soundtracks or movies which are based on the rock music scene. Some rock movies feature the lives of great artists who've left an indelible mark in the music industry, and it is great that we not only know how great the artist is in making music but also the story behind the fame, the struggles and the challenges he encountered on his way to stardom. These kind of movies inspires a lot of us, especially those who aim for being a "rockstar" because these movies show that everything is possible if you just believe in your self and do what your heart really wants to do. Here is a list of rock movies you can watch if you wanna have a rockin' movie marathon over the weekend.

1. Across The Universe For every hardcore The Beatles Fans who cant get enough of the fab four, this movie is for you. The movie features 34 of the original compositions of The Beatles including Strawberry Fields Forever, Lucy in the sky with diamonds, dear prudence, and a lot more. The story was about Jude, A guy from Liverpool who enlisted for the Merchant Navy and Lucy, an advocate of an Anti-war movement whose boyfriend was killed while serving the marines during the Vietnam war. Lucy and Jude met through Lucy's brother Max, the privileged and rebellious student who later dropped out of school and drafted in the army.

2. I'm not there A Biographical film inspired by the different facets of Bob Dylan's Life. The film's title was taken from Dylan's 1967 basement tape recording "I'm not there", which was not release until it was included in the movie's soundtrack. Six actors depict Dylan's Life and Persona: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and Ben. The movie was released two months before Heath Ledger's death and was one of his last movies.

3. Sid and Nancy A 1986 British biographical movie directed by Alex Cox which portrays the tragic and self-destructive lives of Sid Vicious, the notorious bassist of the punk rock band The Sex Pistols and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Sid Started dating Nancy when she sold him heroin. They fell inlove deeply but their addiction affected Sid's relationship with his band which eventually broke up in the midst of their American tour. Sid's career went down and was dismissed as a has-been when he attempted to start a solo career. Nancy's addiction led to a deep depression and tragically ended in an argument when Sid announced he will stop using heroin. The suicidal Nancy begged him to kill her,  which he did by stabbing her. Starring in the movie was Gary Oldman as Sid and Chloe Webb as Nancy.

4. Killing Bono is a 2011 British-Irish comedy film directed by Nick Hamm, based on Neil McCormick's 2003 memoir Killing Bono: I Was Bono's Doppelgänger. The film loosely recreates the story of young Irish rocker McCormick and his younger brother, Ivan, who attempt to become rock stars but can only look on as their secondary school friends form U2 and become the biggest band in the world. The film stars Ben Barnes as Neil McCormick, Robert Sheehan as Ivan McCormick, and Martin McCann as Irish singer Bono. It also features the late Pete Postlethwaite in his final film role. The movie, which was shot in Northern Ireland, was funded by Northern Ireland Screen  and was released by Paramount Pictures (the distributor of U2's film Rattle and Hum) in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2011. Sony Music Entertainment released the movie's soundtrack worldwide. The European premiere was held in the Savoy Cinema in Dublin. (wikipedia)

5. A Hard Day's Night is a 1964 British black-and-white comedy film directed by Richard Lester and starring The Beatles—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—during the height of Beatlemania. Halliwell encapsulates the plot as "Harassed by their manager and Paul's grandpa, The Beatles embark from Liverpool by train for a London TV show." Having escaped a horde of fans, once aboard the train and trying to relax, various interruptions begin to test their patience, prompting George to go to the goods van for some peace and quiet. On arrival in London, The Beatles are driven to a hotel where they feel trapped. After a night out during which Paul's grandfather causes minor trouble at a casino, the group is taken to the theatre where their performance is to be filmed. The preparations are lengthy so Ringo decides to spend some time alone reading a book. Paul's grandfather, a "villain, a real mixer," convinces him that he should be outside experiencing life instead of reading books, so Ringo goes off by himself. He tries to have a quiet drink in a pub, walks alongside a canal and at one point rides a bicycle along a railway station platform. Meanwhile, the rest of the band frantically (and unsuccessfully) attempts to find Ringo. Finally, however, he returns, after being arrested by the police along with Paul's grandfather, and the concert goes ahead as planned.

10 Rock Songs about Jealousy

JEALOUSY. It could be an indicator of Love because of the feeling of fear of losing someone especially if our spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, friend, or even our parents are giving much attention to someone rather than us. It also includes a feeling of insecurity over someone who is given an attention by our loved ones. Its only natural and it shouldn't interfere with our relationship to someone. Jealousy could also be a source of destruction especially of our relationship with the people we value so much because of the anger, resentment, and disgust that we feel towards the "other" person. When we are jealous, we tend to get carried away with our emotions and do things that are beyond our control. Others may become violent and others even KILL because of jealousy. Whenever we feel jealous, it is great to divert our attention so we wont be able to do things that we may regret in the end, and music is a great diversion. Here are Rock songs we can sing with to bang off the feeling of aggression brought by jealousy.

1. Jealous Guy - The Beatles
2. Bliss - Muse
3. Jealous Again - Black Crowes
4. Jealousy - Queen
5. Tell Her No - The Zombies
6. Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
7. Make Damn Sure - Taking Back Sunday
8. Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones
9. Next Contestant - Nickelback
10. Mr. Brightside - The Killers

10 Rock Songs about Death and Dying

Death is the only thing in the world that we can't defy and avoid. All of us will die, but in a different manner. Some people believe there's life after death. Some believe that we are re-incarnated after death to a totally different personality or sometimes, to an animal. Some believe that there's nothing after death, just the paralysis of the human body, cessation of the human organs' functions, the decomposing of the human body. Wikipedia defines death as the cessation or permanent termination of all biological functions that sustain a living organism.  My personal belief about death is that after death, we will all face our creator to judge the life we had on earth. Have we lived the life according to his will? have we done good to our neighbors? I am afraid of death because of the people that I will leave in this world, especially my children. I am afraid of the life that they will have after I'm gone. To ease off the fear of dying, I've listed these rock songs about death and dying, and sure i'll be playing these on my death bed when the time comes.

1. In My Time Of Dying - Led Zeppelin
2. Enter Sandman - Metallica
3. Today - Smashing Pumpkins
4. Knocking on Heaven's Door - Guns n' Roses
5. Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
6. What Sarah Said - Death Cab For Cutie
7. Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
8. The Freshman - The Verve Pipe
9. Paint it black - The Rolling Stones
10. All Things Must Pass - George Harrison

Rock Songs About the Sun

We've experienced a cold, gloomy weather these past few days because of several typhoons that hit the country last week. I've missed the hot, sunny weather, especially when I go out taking the kids to school. I hate walking in the muddy, wet road especially when there's flood, it's just ruining my day..and my outfit! Add to that the danger of soaking to flood because of several diseases and infections we might acquire such as athlete's foot and leptospirosis. But of course, we can't fight with nature, the rain will pour down whether we like it or not. So, to cheer the humdrum day up, I come up with rock songs that has something to do with the sun.
1. Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles One of my favorite The Beatles pieces because of its cheerful melody, reminds me of the feeling of finally seeing the sun after the long, cold, rainy weather. The song is actually about the joy of finally seeing the sun after the winter

2. Set the controls for the heart of the sun - Pink Floyd Some of the lyrics were borrowed from the chinese book The Poem of the late T'ang. Some of the lines were "Witness the man who raved at the wall as he wrote his questions to heaven", "watch little by little, the nights turn around", "countless the twigs which tremble the dawn", and "one inch of love is one inch of ashes" Which was written by Li He and Li Shangyin respectively.

3. Sunshine of your love - Cream This was written by Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton after they attended The Jimi Hendrix Experience Show in London. Bruce later wrote the riff that runs throughout the song.During an all night session, Pete Brown, as he looked at the window and saw the sun was coming up, he wrote " its getting near dawn and lights close their tired eyes", which was the first line of the lyrics. Clapton later wrote the bridge of the song.

4. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden The song's lyrics seems like begging for the sun to come up to brighten up the bleak day brought by the rain.

5. Sun is Shining - Bob Marley A very sunny song and bright song! It is about appreciating the bright weather and the happy feeling brought by the sun. The lyrics said "sun is shining, the weather is sweet make you wanna move your dancing feet".

6. Midnight Sun - Asia It is about the mystery of the Midnight Sun phenomenon which is experienced during the summer months in the areas near the north arctic and south antartic poles. The Midnight Sun is a phenomenon where the sun is still visible at the local midnight.

7. Sunny - Bobby Hebb The song was actually written after the day President Kennedy was assassinated and Hebb's older brother was murdered at a local nightclub. Hebb was devastated by the events but wanted to just think of the happier times and look at the brighter day.

8. Warmth of the sun - The Beach Boys The song is about the love that will never die even if the relationship is all over. The guy in the song still dreams of the love that's already gone just like the warmth of the sun that's still there at night. The song was written the night of JFK's assassination

9. Good Day Sunshine - The Beatles It was a song about being in love with the girl named sunshine. One of the cheerful and happy The Beatles songs.

Top 15 Greatest Rock Artists of All Time

I really feel so dreary today and discouraged with what's happening with my life. I'm facing a lot of problems in family, career, financial issues and a lot more and i feel like i couldn't get through this. I want to get this feeling off because it will ruin all our plans, will create more procrastination, and will eventually lead to failure. So, by trying to divert my attention and focus, i thought of blogging about some of the most successful rockstars in history, how they became successful, and what they were before they became the "Rockstars". Sure i'll get a lot of inspiration from this and will be motivated to pick myself up and get on with life no matter how dark it seems on the road to success. Lets Carpe Diem!

He chose the latter but was later discharged after a year because his commanding officers submitted a request that Hendrix be discharged from the military because he slept while on duty, had little regard for regulations, required constant supervision, and showed no skill as a marksman. Hendrix did not object when the opportunity to leave arose. He met Bassist Billy Cox in the army and the two forged a loyal friendship that Hendrix would call upon from April 1969 until Billy's breakdown shortly before Hendrix's death. The two would often perform with other musicians at venues both on and off the base as a loosely organized band named the Casuals. Musically, Hendrix did much to further the development of the electric guitar's repertoire, establishing it as a unique sonic source, rather than merely an amplified version of the acoustic guitar. Likewise, his feedback, wah-wah and fuzz-laden soloing moved guitar distortion well beyond mere novelty, incorporating other effects pedals and units specifically designed for him by his sound technician Roger Mayer (such as the Octavia and Uni-Vibe) with dramatic results.

The award was accepted on behalf of the band by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. It was announced on May 23, 2012, that the Dead's Barton Hall Concert at Cornell University (May 8, 1977) would be preserved in the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.

4. The Rolling Stones In the early 1950s, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were childhood friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School in Dartford, Kent until their families moved apart. In 1960, when Richards, on his way to class at Sidcup Art College, and Jagger, on his way to class at London School of Economics, met at Dartford train station, the Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records Jagger carried revealed a mutual interest, leading to the re-establishment of their friendship and the formation of a band with Dick Taylor (later of Pretty Things). Richards, Taylor, and Jagger found Brian Jones as he sat in playing slide guitar with Alexis Korner's seminal London R&B band, Blues Incorporated, at the Ealing Jazz Club. Blues Incorporated contained two other future members of the Rolling Stones: Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts.

3. Elvis Presley - He was born on January 8, 1935 in Mississippi. His first recording was on August 1953, where he recorded a two-sided acetate disc: my happiness and that's when your heartaches begin in the studio of sun records. He would later claim he intended the record as a gift for his mother. He was inducted into the army on March 24, 1958 as a private at fort chaffee, near fort smith, Arkansas. Though he was already famous at that time, he said he did not want to be treated any differently from anyone else.

Presley's rise to national attention in 1956 transformed the field of popular music and had a huge effect on the broader scope of popular culture. As the catalyst for the cultural revolution that was rock and roll, he was central not only to defining it as a musical genre but in making it a touchstone of youth culture and rebellious attitude. With its racially mixed origins—repeatedly affirmed by Presley—rock and roll's occupation of a central position in mainstream American culture facilitated a new acceptance and appreciation of black culture. In this regard, Little Richard said of Presley, "He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music."Al Green agreed: "He broke the ice for all of us."Presley also heralded the vastly expanded reach of celebrity in the era of mass communication: at the age of 21, within a year of his first appearance on American network television, he was one of the most famous people in the world.

Presley's name, image, and voice are instantly recognizable around the globe. He has inspired a legion of impersonators. In polls and surveys, he is recognized as one of the most important popular music artists and influential Americans."Elvis Presley is the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century", said composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. "He introduced the beat to everything and he changed everything—music, language, clothes. It's a whole new social revolution—the sixties came from it." Bob Dylan described the sensation of first hearing Presley as "like busting out of jail".

A New York Times editorial on the 25th anniversary of Presley's death observed, "All the talentless impersonators and appalling black velvet paintings on display can make him seem little more than a perverse and distant memory. But before Elvis was camp, he was its opposite: a genuine cultural force. ... Elvis's breakthroughs are underappreciated because in this rock-and-roll age, his hard-rocking music and sultry style have triumphed so completely."Not only Presley's achievements, but his failings as well, are seen by some cultural observers as adding to the power of his legacy, as in this description by Greil Marcus:

Elvis Presley is a supreme figure in American life, one whose presence, no matter how banal or predictable, brooks no real comparisons. ... The cultural range of his music has expanded to the point where it includes not only the hits of the day, but also patriotic recitals, pure country gospel, and really dirty blues. ... Elvis has emerged as a great artist, a great rocker, a great purveyor of schlock, a great heart throb, a great bore, a great symbol of potency, a great ham, a great nice person, and, yes, a great American.

2. Bob Dylan -   Bob Dylan was born "Robert Allen Zimmerman" (Hebrew name שבתאי זיסאל בן אברהם [Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham]) in St. Mary's Hospital on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Iron Range west of Lake Superior. His paternal grandparents, Zigman and Anna Zimmerman, emigrated from Odessa in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine) to the United States following the anti-Semitic pogroms of 1905. His maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Lybba Edelstein, were Lithuanian Jews who arrived in the United States in 1902. In his autobiography Chronicles: Volume One, Dylan writes that his paternal grandmother's maiden name was Kyrgyz and her family originated from Kars, Turkey.

Dylan dropped out of college at the end of his freshman year. In January 1961, he traveled to New York City, hoping to perform there and visit his musical idol Woody Guthrie, who was seriously ill with Huntington's Disease in Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. Guthrie had been a revelation to Dylan and was the biggest influence on his early performances. Describing Guthrie's impact on him, Dylan later wrote: "The songs themselves had the infinite sweep of humanity in them ... [He] was the true voice of the American spirit. I said to myself I was going to be Guthrie's greatest disciple."As well as visiting Guthrie in the hospital, Dylan befriended Guthrie's acolyte Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Much of Guthrie's repertoire was actually channeled through Elliott, and Dylan paid tribute to Elliott in Chronicles (2004)

Dylan has won many awards throughout his career including 11 Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and one Golden Globe Award; He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. In May 2012, Dylan was one out of thirteen honorees to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

1. The Beatles - In March 1957 John Lennon, then aged sixteen, formed a skiffle group with several friends from Quarry Bank school. They briefly called themselves the Blackjacks, before changing their name to The Quarrymen after discovering that a respected local group was already using the name. Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney joined as a guitarist shortly after he and Lennon met that July. In February 1958 McCartney invited his friend George Harrison to watch the group. The fourteen-year-old auditioned for Lennon, who was impressed by his playing but initially thought him too young for the band. After a month of persistence, Harrison joined as lead guitarist. By January 1959 Lennon's Quarry Bank friends had left the group, and he began studies at theLiverpool College of Art. The three guitarists, billing themselves at least three times as Johnny and the Moondogs, were playing rock and roll whenever they could find a drummer.Lennon's art school friend Stuart Sutcliffe, who had recently sold one of his paintings and purchased a bass guitar, joined in January 1960, and it was he who suggested changing the band's name to Beatals as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets. They used the name through May, when they became the Silver Beetles, before undertaking a brief tour of Scotland as the backing group for pop singer and fellow Liverpudlian Johnny Gentle. By early July they changed their name to The Silver Beatles, and by the middle of August to The Beatles.

The Beatles' influence on popular culture was—and remains—immense. Former Rolling Stone associate editor Robert Greenfield compares the band to Picasso as "artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original.... [I]n the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive". From the 1920s, the United States had dominated popular entertainment culture throughout much of the world, via Hollywood movies, jazz, the music of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley and, later, the rock and roll that first emerged in Memphis, Tennessee. The Beatles not only sparked the British Invasion of the US, they became a globally influential phenomenon as well.

Their musical innovations and commercial success inspired musicians worldwide. Many artists have acknowledged their influence and enjoyed chart success with covers of their songs. On radio, their arrival marked the beginning of a new era; programme director Rick Sklar of New York's WABC went so far as to forbid his DJs from playing any "pre-Beatles" music. The Beatles helped to redefine the LP as something more than just a few hits padded out with "filler", and they were primary innovators of the modern music video. The Shea Stadium show with which they opened their 1965 North American tour attracted an estimated 55,600 people, then the largest audience in concert history; Spitz describes the event as a "major breakthrough...a giant step toward reshaping the concert business." Emulation of their clothing and especially their hairstyles, which became a mark of rebellion, had a global impact on fashion, wrote Gould.

According to Gould, the band changed the way people listened to popular music and experienced its role in their lives. From what began as the Beatlemania fad, the group grew to be perceived by many fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions. As icons of the 1960s counterculture, Gould continues, they became a catalyst for bohemianism and activism in various social and political arenas, fuelling movements such as women's liberation, gay liberation and environmentalism. According to Peter Lavezzoli, after the "more popular than Jesus" controversy in 1966, all four Beatles felt considerable pressure to say the right things and "began a concerted effort to spread a message of wisdom and higher consciousness."

In 1965 Queen Elizabeth II appointed Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). The film Let It Be (1970) won the 1971 Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The Beatles have received 7 Grammy Awards and 15 Ivor Novello Awards. They have been awarded 6 Diamond albums, as well as 24 Multi-Platinum albums, 39 Platinum albums and 45 Gold albums in the United States, while in the UK they have 4 Multi-Platinum albums, 4 Platinum albums, 8 Gold albums and 1 Silver album. The group were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Beatles are the best-selling band in history; EMI Records estimate that they have sold over one billion units around the world. They have had more number one albums on the British charts, 15, and sold more singles in the UK, 21.9 million, than any other act. They ranked number one in Billboard magazine's list of the all-time most successful Hot 100 artists, released in 2008 to celebrate the US singles chart's fiftieth anniversary. As of 2012, they hold the record for most number one hits on the Hot 100 chart with 20, and the Recording Industry Association of America certifies that the group have sold 177 million units in the US, more than any other artist. They were collectively included in Timemagazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most influential people.
